Moorland management, wildfire management and a delicious supper

Peakland Environmental Farmers members enjoyed a sunny walk on the Strines Moor by kind permission of the Wentworth Fitzwilliam Estate last week.

The walk onto the moor was led by Geoff Eyre, the incredibly knowledgeable moorland legend! Geoff gave a talk on moorland restoration and his approach which has been so successful both in terms of environmental benefits and cost effectiveness.

Our members then returned to The Strines Inn where they were provided with a pie and pea supper. Following this, Ruth Battye, a Peakland Environmental Farmers Steering Group Member, gave a fascinating talk on her work with the Peak District Wildfire Risk Assessment report. The audience had an opportunity to ask questions about this vital work – never more relevant than now with several moorland fires occurring in the past week.

To round off the evening, Geoff was presented with an award from the National Gamekeepers Organisation for the Conservation Champion Award. This award is richly deserved and means a great deal to Geoff – especially as the nominations and winner are selected by gamekeepers themselves.

Peakland Environmental Farmers have events throughout the year, which aim to support farmers, land managers and moorland managers within the Peak District. Please get in touch via email – pef@gwct.org.uk or send a message via social media.
